350 Eritreans Among the 850 Dead
MAY GOD REST THEIR SOULS IN PEACE
UNHCR said 350 of the estimated 850 people travelling aboard the 20-metre fishing boat were Eritrean, while others came from countries such as Ethiopia, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Ivory Coast and Syria.
Most of the migrants on board the doomed vessel were either on deck or crammed into the second level of the boat, hundreds more were locked on the lowest level.
Italian police arrested a 27-year-old Tunisian captain Mohammed Ali Malek and his Syrian crew member Mahmud Bikhit, 25 — whom authorities also charged with human trafficking — when they arrived in Sicily on a rescue boat, along with 25 other survivors of the disaster.
Eritrean Press - We are deeply saddened by this week tragedy filled news to the sisterly countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased.
